Please choose the right forum! When you put up a new topic, please choose the right forum. We're getting a lot of posts going into forums that have nothing to do with the subject of the topic - and this means we have to waste time moving them. The Forums index has a brief description of the purpose of each forum, and each forum has an INFO post pinned to the top of its topic list. If you don't know what forum your topic should go into, read these descriptions. Could new members especially make sure you understand what each forum is for so that we don't have to then move your topic into the correct place.Thanks.

IMPORTANT FORUM ANNOUNCEMENT - PLEASE READ. In an effort to keep things civil and prevent old well worn discussions - for instance yet more complaints about the name "Brights" - from taking up unreasonable amounts of forum space and staff time, we've decided that we will have to start more strictly enforcing the existing rules from now on. This is as a direct result of a request from the Webmaster after a discussion of these issues. If you are a registered Bright then please make sure you have read and understood the Aims and Principles of the Brights Movement. This forum operates to support those aims and principles, as they are by default the Brights' "common ground" for bringing about principled action, and members of this forum have no remit to demand that they be reworked to their own satisfaction. In particular note the following two Guidelines that all members should be aware of, especially before entering into argument with the staff and members over the purpose of this forum or the Brights Movement in general:http://www.the-brights.net/forums/forum/index.php?act=boardrules 1. These forums are the property of The Brights Network. This venue is our responsibility, your posts are yours. Membership is a privilege, and we reserve the right to reject member posts or to cancel member privileges at any time at our sole discretion. 3. The forum staff may reject posts based on their interpretation of these guidelines and specifically the violations listed in the section below. The infringing member may be warned, suspended, subjected to post moderation or have his/her membership permanently revoked, depending on the severity of the violation(s), as deemed by our own discretion. Repetitive violation or disregard of our warnings may result in stricter administrative actions. We will from now on reject, lock, or move discussions that we consider to be a rehash of old topics, or that are aimed at providing a platform for a member to provoke pointless arguments or goad the staff, or any other issue that we feel is detrimental to the civilised running of the forum. We will also revoke the posting privileges of members who ignore warnings or argue with staff who are attempting to enforce the rules of the forum. We see these changes as necessary because of a number of non-constructive issues at the forum in the recent past, but they should not have any effect on constructive, friendly, civil discussions of relevant topics. Thanks for your co-operation in this matter. The Staff.

There is a new special topic in Critical Brainstorming called "Action Topics" in which we would like to discuss the types of Activist actions that forum members would feel it was worthwhile trying to organise. Please take a look and think about what actions you would like to see being run from this forum.Currently there is 1 suggestion, which is to revive the Webcomic project originally started in 2004.( http://www.the-brights.net/forums/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=5220&view=findpost&p=81359 )

We have now implemented a number of changes to the forum structure, primarily the Discussion forums, and the Portal. We hope that the changes will make the forum easier to browse, as well as encourage a diversity of topics for everyone to enjoy. Please have a look at this post to see a more thorough list of the changes. We will now enter a changeover period where some forums will look emptier than others, and many topics will be in the wrong forum. Don’t let this worry you! The staff will be working constantly to move active topics into their right place. If you are unsure where to post a new topic, read the INFO posts that are pinned in each of the Discussion forums, and post wherever feels best. The staff will move the topic if need be. :) There has also been a number of changes to the Portal, primarily to the top right Navigation Bar and the Main Menu. We hope that the removal of redundant links will make navigation of the forum more straightforward. In the near future, we are planning to also give the Action forums an overhaul so as to facilitate collaborative actions. We hope that you will enjoy the new forum structure. Please feel free to post comments and suggestions in this thread . --The Forum Staff

Egypt: Fatwa on statues (Bobsie)

From Aljazeera.net: http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/48AA33FF-8E95-44A0-A89A-528BC4A6A34F.htm A fatwa issued by Egypt's religious authority forbidding the display of statues has raised fears that it could be used as an excuse to destroy the country's historical heritage. Shaikh Ali Gomaa, the Grand Mufti of Egypt and the country's most senior Islamic jurist, issued the religious edict last week. He ruled that the exhibition of statues in homes is prohibited and based his opinion on the hadith (the sayings of Prophet Muhammad). Intellectuals and artists argue that the decree represents a setback for art - a mainstay of the multi-billion-dollar tourist industry - and would damage the country's fledgling sculpture industry. Gamal al-Ghitani, editor of the literary magazine Akhbar al-Adab, said: "We don't rule out that someone will enter the Karnak temple in Luxor or any other pharaonic temple and blow it up on the basis of the fatwa." Ezzat al-Qamhawi, a novelist, said Gomaa's ruling would "return Muslims to the dark ages". Daud Abdul Sayed, a film director, said the ruling "simply ignored the spiritual evolvement of Muslims since the arrival of Islam ... Clearly, it was natural that they forbid statues under early Islam because people worshipped them. "But are there Muslims worshipping statues nearly 15 centuries later?" Yussef Zidan, director of the manuscript museum at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, said: "Why would anyone even bring up the issue in a country where there are more than 10 state-owned institutions that teach sculpting and more than 20 others that teach the history of art?" Ghitani said: "It's time for those placing impediments between Islam and innovation to get out of our lives."
