Earth and Life: Changes over Time

The Brights’ Classroom Poster Project

This is a project to disseminate a high quality wall poster titled “Earth and Life: changes over time” to science teachers who commit to use it.

The poster deals with earth’s changes in both physical and biological realms and extends over 5 feet in width. Developed by science faculty at Kankakee Community College, there is nothing like it elsewhere. Here is the faculty's description of the poster:

"Earth and Life: changes over time" is a pictorial representation of evolution from the “Big Bang” to current times. The unique feature of this poster is that it combines physical science and life science events on the same time scale. The viewer will be able to see connections not seen in other timelines of evolution. Educators will be able to show students the impact of physical and geological events on the evolution of life, while others can enjoy the grandness of the presentation and gain a new perspective of the processes involved in our changing world.

The poster has been reviewed by staff from the National Association of Biology Teachers and National Evolutionary Synthesis Center.

You can view the sample poster (66” wide by 13” high) here. (PDF - 4.5M)

Let’s do it! Let’s endeavor to convey this item FREE to high school science teachers who will commit to use it to help youngsters better understand evolutionary change. Teachers will qualify to receive this splendid teaching resource by agreeing that they are equipped and willing to plan for its use in their classrooms when teaching this topic in their curriculum. They must provide a valid school address and contact information. We will send this wall poster to as many such teachers as we have resources to supply.

A high school teacher [USA] who is teaching about evolution in his/her classroom may apply to receive a poster by completing and submitting this request form.

Staff at Brights Central have occasionally emailed teachers to check if they had yet received the poster. Besides the "yes" or "not yet" replies of thanks, many have added what they thought about its content. Of all contacted so far, the reaction has been unanimously positive. See sample comments from teachers who have already received a poster.

You (or any science enthusiast who learns of this project) can use the PayPal link provided below to earmark financial support to this initiative. Any earmarked amount will go directly to this endeavor!

Record of Early Piloting and Vetting of This Project

The colorful evolution wall poster costs $45 if printed singly, but printing in large quantities drops the cost dramatically.

The Brights’ Net began testing its new “Evolution Poster Project” with teachers who were attending the National [USA] Association of Biology Teachers in November 2010. Thanks to a donation to the project from a supportive Bright, fifty posters were printed and distributed to these teachers, and feedback on usage subsequently sought in April, 2011.

Then, with an announcement to the Special Initiative Group for “Categorically Sound Science,” followed by an announcement in the April 2011 Brights' Bulletin, Brights Central was able to accrue sufficient funding to print 400 posters for free distribution to high school science teachers.

It is hoped that BC can extend the project and promote it to broader audiences for additional printings. Further organizational vetting will take place with NABT, the National Association of Science Teachers, and National Evolutionary Synthesis Center.

Any Bright or anyone who is supportive of authentic science can donate at any time using the link above.
