The Future Jew argues that the time has come for the Jewish people to set aside their antique devotions, and reshape Judaism as ordained by intellectual integrity. In the past the Jews gave the world monotheism. In the future they must lead in establishing global secularism and a world liberated from the irrational, chronic, bloody antagonisms born of religious superstition.
The book demonstrates that the Jewish people have not responded honestly to several millennia of evidence. Most glaringly, they have not yet responded decisively to the Holocaust. They have failed to turn their backs on the discredited idea of God, and have failed to recognize the Holocaust as a radical turning point in their history. The Future Jew declares that the extermination of six million innocents could only have happened in a world devoid of divinity.
Carin’s petition to his fellow Jews to abolish faith and God, in the name of the six million, is also an appeal to all his fellow humans to start acting like same.
What does the book have to do with the Brights¹ movement? Only everything. Here is a brief excerpt from the book¹s imagined preamble to the ³Charter of the Future Jews²:
The tribe once known as monotheists now proclaims itself an extended nation of monohumanists. The universe holds one reality. This earth hosts one humanity.
Our species has matured and is set to soar. Recognizing the primacy of the laws of nature, and explaining existence in terms of matter and energy, the Jews of the 3rd millennium assign precise names to the gods of the universe and the overseers of eternity. The names of those gods and overseers:
- Electromagnetism.
- Gravitation.
- Quantum Mechanics.
- Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics.
- A pantheon to promote life on earth. A covenant with objective truth.
Human existence is the triumphant spawn of a billion years of evolution. The world’s proper “church” is an institution that spreads the light of science, the anthem of freedom, and the odes of peace and justice. The world’s most suitable “priests” are the scientists, physicians, researchers and technologists who provide individuals with the means to take greater and ever greater control of their lives.
Along this path will flourish tikkun olam, the mending of the world.
